Applying GPS Technology to Conservation in Colombia

Sarah Cassius, BA ’19, spent a summer interning in Medellin, Colombia, where she applied her geography background to help conserve land.

Faculty News: Trachtenberg Prize and Fulbright Scholarship Awardees

Dr. Marie Price was awarded the 2022 Trachtenberg Prize, and Dr. Aman Luthra became the latest Geography faculty member to be awarded a Fulbright Scholarship.

Each year the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies present awards to students that show outstanding leadership qualities and academic excellence.

Joseph Dymond Award 2022

The Department of Geography is pleased to announce the 2022 recipients of the annual Joseph Dymond Award. 

Special Events

Mapathon

Hosted by a student group, Mapathons are held at least once each semester to contribute to international aid efforts. Using open-source mapping software, participants help map areas that are identified as at risk for or have recently experienced disasters. All members of the GW community are invited to join a Mapathon event — no experience required.

Geography Bowl

The American Association of Geographers hosts the annual World Geography Bowl, a quiz tournament featuring teams of undergraduate and graduate students from schools across the Mid-Atlantic region. The winning team and individuals win prizes, and all participants receive a travel stipend to offset expenses.
