“Getting a master’s in geography from GW was one of the best decisions I've made. … The skills and networks I gained prepared me well for my career in research and public policy.”

The Joseph Dymond Scholarship in Geography Fund

Geography Professor Joe Dymond passed away in January 2019 after a seven-month battle with leukemia. A lifelong educator, Dymond began teaching geography at GW in 2002. He was a legendary teacher who won every teaching award he was eligible for and was greatly admired by all. He also led study abroad research trips to Botswana with Professor Richard Hinton and helped the department launch YouthMappers, an organization of students at universities around the world who use open-source maps and mapping techniques to abate humanitarian crises and aid development work.

At the family’s request, the Department of Geography has established the Joseph Dymond Scholarship Fund in support of students.

The Dorn C. McGrath Jr. Lecture Fund supports an annual lecture from a prominent urban planner or geographer. The fund honors the contributions of Professor Emeritus Dorn C. McGrath Jr. and supports high-level discussions about planning innovations and best practices in the United States and abroad. Invited speakers give a public lecture and meet with geography students who have urban interests. Past lectures have featured the prolific sustainability scholar Peter Newman and MIT Professor of Economic Geography and Regional Planning Amy Glasmeier.

History

Professor Emeritus Dorn C. McGrath Jr. led the Department of Geography from 1996 to 2003. In retirement he continues to be an active contributor to the life of the department and the university. McGrath taught for 35 years at GW, first in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and later in the Department of Geography. He also founded the department's Center for Urban and Environmental Research (CUER). Throughout his tenure at the university he worked closely with local neighborhoods, the District of Columbia government and state and federal agencies to address planning concerns in the city that he loved. He trained many students about the art and craft of urban planning, several of whom are planning professionals today.
