A Climate Change Mission in the Arctic

A cohort of GW undergraduate and graduate students traveled to the Siberian tundra to see first hand how climate change has ravaged a polar environment and changed people’s lives. Through measuring permafrost characteristics and meeting with local officials — museum managers, city planners, geologists, architects — the students learned about the challenges of managing urban sustainability in severe climates. The expedition was led by geography professors Dmitry Streletskiy and Nikolay Shiklomanov.
