Graduate
The Department of Geography graduate programs develop students’ understanding of geographical change at various sites and scales through the application of interdisciplinary frameworks and methods, including social science theory and geospatial technologies.
Collaborative research between faculty and graduate students is a hallmark of the graduate program, which emphasizes strong quantitative and research skills in geographical analysis. Fieldwork and internship options are also available for credit.
Application Deadlines:
- Fall Semester: April 1 (February 1 for fellowship applicants)
- Spring Semester: October 1
Any applications received outside of these deadlines will be considered on an individual basis.

Interdisciplinary and Consortium Classes
Students are encouraged to take electives from relevant programs and departments across the university. Students may find courses appropriate to their field of study from areas such as international affairs, engineering, economics, public policy, public health, anthropology, American Studies and sociology. Students should consult their advisors when choosing electives.
GW also belongs to the Consortium of the Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area, which means students may take graduate-level courses at American University, George Mason University, Georgetown University, Howard University or the University of Maryland. Approval for consortium classes must be submitted through a form from the Office of the Registrar.
