Keith Waters does both applied and academic work. His academic work focuses on regional economics from a complexity perspective. He uses network analysis and agent-based modeling to study individual regions as well as networks of regions. His applied work centers on the DC metropolitan area, working local governments, real estate associations, and transportation authorities. He is a member of the American Association of Geographers and is currently an at-large board member of the economic geography specialty group.
